Arunachal Pradesh

Popularly known as ‘Land of the Dawn-lit-Mountains’, Arunachal Pradesh is India’s remotest state and the first Indian soil to greet the rising sun. Located on the northeastern tip of India with its borders touching China, Bhutan and Burma (Myanmar), this beautiful land is endowed with dazzling array of flora and fauna that is sure to allure any tourist. More than 500 rare species of Orchids are found in the dense jungles of Arunachal Pradesh. The misty hills, sparkling rivers, gurgling waterfalls add charm to the beauty of this incredible land. Arunachal Pradesh finds its mention in the literature of Kalika Purana and the great Hindu Epic Mahabharata. It is believed to be the Prabhu Mountains of the Puranas. According to a Hindu mythological legend, Arunachal Pradesh was the place where sage Parshuram washed away his sin, sage Vyasa meditated, King Bhishmaka founded his kingdom and Lord Krishna married his consort Rukmini. Ruled by many powerful dynasties and kingdoms, Arunachal Pradesh India is dotted with innumerable historical monuments and archeological remains, which bear testimony to its rich cultural heritage.

All about Arunachal Pradesh

Arunachal Pradesh is located between 26.28° N and 29.30° N latitude and 91.20° E and 97.30° E longitude and has an area of 83,743 km2 (32,333 sq mi).

The highest peak in the state is Kangto, at 7,060 metres (23,160 ft). Nyegi Kangsang, the main Gorichen peak, and the Eastern Gorichen peak are other tall Himalaya peaks. The state's mountain ranges, in the extreme East of India, are described as "the place where the sun rises" in historical Indian texts and named the Aruna Mountains, which inspired the name of the state. The villages of Dong (more accessible by car, and with a lookout favoured by tourists) and Vijaynagar (on the edge of Myanmar) receive the first sunlight in all of India.

Major rivers of Arunachal Pradesh include the Kameng, Subansiri, Siang (Brahmaputra), Dibang, Lohit and Noa Dihing rivers. Subsurface flows and summer snow melt contribute to the volume of water. Mountains until the Siang river are classified as the Eastern Himalayas. Those between the Siang and Noa Dihing are classified as the Mishmi Hills that may be part of the Hengduan Mountains. Mountains south of the Noa Dihing in Tirap and Longding districts are part of the Patkai Range.

The climate of Arunachal Pradesh varies with elevation. The low-altitude areas have a humid subtropical climate. High-altitude areas (3,500–5,500 m) have a subtropical highland climate and alpine climate. Arunachal Pradesh receives 2,000 to 5,000 millimetres (79 to 197 in) of rainfall annually,70%–80% obtained between May and October.

Arunachal Pradesh has among the highest diversity of mammals and birds in India. There are around 750 species of birds and more than 200 species of mammals in the state. Arunachal's forests account for one-third of habitat area within the Himalayan biodiversity hot-spot. 31,273 km2 (12,075 sq mi) of Arunachal's forests were identified as part of a vast area of continuous forests (65,730 km2 or 25,380 sq mi, including forests in Myanmar, China and Bhutan) known as Intact forest landscapes There are three tiger reserves in the state: a reserve in Namdapha National Park, Mouling National Park and Pakke Tiger Reserve

Arunachal Pradesh covered with 63,093 km2 (24,360 sq mi) of tree cover (77% of its land area). It harbours over 5,000 plants, about 85 terrestrial mammals, over 500 birds and many butterflies, insects and reptiles.

The major animal species are tiger, leopard, snow leopard, Asian elephant, sambar deer, chital deer, barking deer, sloth bear, mithun, gaur, dhole, giant squirrel, marbled cat, leopard cat.A new subspecies of hoolock gibbon has been described from the state which has been named as the Mishmi Hills hoolock gibbon

1. Guwahati – Bhalukpong - Tawang - Dirang

  1. Day 1 Arrive Guwahati

    Arrive Guwahati and transfer to your hotel. Later visit Kamakhya Temple, on Nilachal hill, 08 kms west of Guwahati city, is one of the most venerated shaktipeeths in India. The temple is dedicated to goddess Kamakhya an incarnation of Sati. It is on Nilachal hill, says the Shiva Purana, that the yoni or creative organ of Sati fell when Vishnu, in a bid to save the world from the Shiva’s tandava nrittya or dance of destruction, cut her dead body into 51 pieces with his suddarshan chakra. The garbhagriha deep inside the temple marks the sacred spot and is kept covered with red silken cloth. If time permits visit Umananda Temple and go for optional river cruise (on direct payment)O/n hotel.

  2. Day 2 Guwahati –Bhalukpong/Tezpur (About 260 KMS/ 5 HRS.)

    Morning after breakfast drive to Bhalukpong en-route visit Mahamrityunjai temple at Nagaon. Later drive to Bhalukpong and transfer to your hotel. After lunch enjoy fringe the border of Assam and Arunachal Pradesh.

  3. Day 3 Bhalukpong - Dirang (About 190 Kms/ 05-06 Hrs)

    After breakfast drive to Dirang en-route visit Asia’s second largest Orchidarium at Tipi where one can have a quick look over 7500 orchids from a collection of about 300 species, On arrival in Dirang visit Dirang Monastery & Kiwi Garden, check in at your hotel for overnight stay

  4. Day 4 Dirang - Tawang (About 125 Kms/ 06 Hrs)

    After breakfast drive to Tawang, en-route stop over at Sella Pass (13,700 ft) to enjoy the area, Jaswant Garh war memorial & Jung falls or Nuranang falls. Arrive Tawang and transfer to your hotel. If time permits visit the local market area. Overnight in Tawang.

  5. Day 5 Tawang

    After breakfast visit of 400 years (17th century) old Tawang Monastery which is the second largest monastery in the world after Potala Palace in Tibet. The building is about 113 feet longand 80 feet wide and houses valuable antiquities, books and manuscripts-handwritten and printed. Later visit Tawang War Memorial, a 40 foot high multi-hued memorial, has a structure constructed in stupa design. Dedicated to the martyrs of Sino-Indo War held in 1962, this memorial is nestled among beautiful peaks, which overlooks the Tawang-Chu valley. Rest of the day free to stroll round the streets of the town. Overnight in Tawang.

  6. Day 6 Tawang

    After breakfast a day excursion to Bumla pass (China Border), en-route visit PTTSO Lake & Madhuri Lake. Drive back to hotel. Overnight stay at Tawang.

  7. Day 7 Tawang - Bomdila (About 185 Kms/ 06-07 Hrs)

    After an early breakfast drive to Bomdila and check in at your hotel. Afternoon visit Bomdila old & new Buddist Monastery. Evening free for own. Overnight at Bomdila.

  8. Day 8 Bomdila - Guwahati (About 330 Kms/6-7hrs.)

    Day at leisure to explore the tea garden & the tea processing in the factory. O/n at Dibrugarh.

  3. Day 3 Dibrugarh – Roing Via Dhola Sadiya Bridge ( About 110 Kms / 04 Hrs)

    Morning post breakfast check out from the hotel & drive straight to Roing with enroute visit of India’s longest span, the 9.15 km Dhola-Sadiya bridge across river Lohit at the easternmost tip of Assam. Explore the unexplored natural beauty of the river, paddy fields & villages in and around Sadiya. Also visit to a Popular Hindu Pilgrimage Centre, locally so called Burha -Burhir Than dedicated to lord Shiva.

    Later proceed to the Roing visiting the Idu Mishmi Villages on the way.

    Take the opportunity to take a glance of their unique structured houses in the villages which are long like a bus, rectangular size raised above two feet from the ground and supported on wooden posts usually accommodate a joint family. Bamboo, cane, wood and leaves of toku and straws are used for construction.

    The front is an extension of roof with ground floor to keep the domesticated animal and next to it is a small veranda/corridor made of bamboo or plank for stepping up from the ladder to enter into house. A house may have a number of rooms with partitioned as per strength of the family members. There is a straight corridor/passage. Each room has a hearth and is used for both cooking and sleeping. The serial allocation of room consists of male room, which is called AGRAH. There may be passages in between two rooms for latrine and husking of paddy. Each room has one window towards the poultry yard and pigsty under the house.

    Later to Roing. Check in at Idu Mishmi Hut at Roing located by a very beautiful scenic hill.

  4. Day 4 Roing – Namsai Via Parashuram Kund

    Morning post breakfast drive straight to Parashuram Kund ( ABOUT 04 HRS) - a Hindu pilgrimage centre situated on the Brahmaputra plateau in the lower reaches of the Lohit River and 21 km north of Tezu in Lohit district of Arunachal Pradesh. Later drive back to Namsai inhabited by The Tai Khamti or simply Khamti as they are also known, are a sub-group of the Tai peoples ( ABOUT 04 HRS) with enroute visit of Chokham Monastery . Later to the beautiful Golden Pagoda Monastery at Namsai. Check in at the Monastery Guest House. O/n at the Guest House.

  5. Day 5 Namsai – Dibrugarh ( About 03 Hrs)

    Morning after breakfast transfer to Dibrugarh to Catch Train Back home.

3. Dibrugarh-Sibsagar-Mon-Jorhat-Majuli-Ziro-Itanagar-Tezpur-Shillong-Guwahati–Sualkuchi

  1. Day 1 Dibrugarh-Sibsagar (Approx. 90 Kms/2-3 Hrs.)

    On arrival in Dibrugarh straight drive to Sibsagar. Sivasagar was the capital of the Ahom rulers from 1228 to 1826 AD. Sivasagar got its present name from Sivasagar Tank, excavated by the Ahom queen Ambika. The tank was named after her husband, Shiva Singha. Sivasagar tank is also known as Borpukhuri, literally, big lake. Shiva Dol, Vishnu Dol and Devi Dol are the three temples on the banks of Sivasagar.

    Arrive Sivasagar and check in at your hotel. Later visit Rang Ghar–the royal observatory and Shiva/Vishnu Temples & Sivasagar Tank etc. Overnight at hotel.

  2. Day 2 Mon

    After breakfast visit Longwa Village bordering India and Burma. Situated about 40 km from the district headquarters of Mon. Longwa is one of the biggest villages in the district. Some portion of this village lies in India and some in Myanmar. However, it is controlled by a chief known as Angh. Half of the house of the chief falls in India and the other half in Myanmar. The lucky villagers have two citizenships, one from India and the other one from Burma. It is the place where coal mine was discovered in 1907. A visit to the village will acquaint you with the culture of the tribe. They are skilled in making exquisite handicrafts.Afternoon visit Naga weavers in and around Mon town.

  4. Day 4 Jorhat (Approx. 190 Kms/7-8 Hrs.)

    After breakfast drive back to Assam, Jorhat via Nazira. Enroute visit Charaideo – Royal Cemetary of Ahom Dynasty. On arrival in Jorhat transfer to your hotel for overnight stay.

  5. Day 5 Majuli (Approx. 20 Kms/45 Mins To Nimatighat + 1 ½ Hrs. Ferry Crossing)

    After breakfast drive to Nimati Ghat (near Jorhat) to board on public ferry (country boat fitted with motor). Cruise for approx. 1 ½ hrs to reach Majuli.

    Majuli is the largest fresh Water mid-river deltoid island in the world. It is situated in the upper reaches of the river Brahmaputra in Assam. This Island, with a population of 1.6 Lakhs, majority being tribal, is endowed with rich heritage and has been the abode of the neo-vaishnavite culture. The island is a bio-diversity hotspot and has rich ecology with rare species of flora and fauna.

    Majuli for the past five centuries has been the cultural capital of Assam. The main depositories of cultural and spiritual heritage are the Sattras, which are just like Gurukul (hermitages) of yore. Here up to 400 celibates' stay for life preserving spiritual and cultural heritage, renouncing worldly desires. From the time of the great Vaishnavite renaissance of 14th and 15th century AD, under Srimanta Sankardeva, Srimanta Madhab Deva and other saints this island became the seat of Vaishnavite religion, art and culture. The famous Satriya Nritya (Dance) and Ankiya Bhaona (Traditional Drama) created by Sankardeva are now internationally acclaimed and nationally honored. Majuli is equally famous for Tribal Folk Culture and Heritage. It is said to be the cradle of Missing and Deori cultures. Explore in and around Majuli.

    On arrival visit Satras, Missing tribal village, Mask making village & Pottery village. All Meals and Overnight at Majuli.

  6. Day 6 Majuli

    Full day visit Mishing villages and interact with the lady weavers and visit a Woman Welfare Society to know more about textiles in Majuli Island. Evening free to relax. Overnight in Bamboo Huts.

  7. Day 7 Ziro (Approx. 30 Mins Ferry Crossing + 200 Kms/5-6 Hrs.)

    Morning after breakfast drive to northern part of Majuli Island to catch ferry to cross the subsidiary of Brahmaputra river, Buridihing. After crossing the river continue drive to Ziro via Pohumara junction. On arrival transfer to your hotel for overnight stay.

  8. Day 8 Ziro

    Full day visit of Ziro Valley and visit Bula/Hari/Hija & Hapoli villages. Overnight in Hotel.

  9. Day 9 Itanagar-Tezpur (Approx. 260 Kms/6-7 Hrs.)

    Morning after early breakfast drive to Tezpur via Itanagar – Capital city of Arunachal Pradesh. After visiting an local old market and lunch, we will continue our drive to Tezpur – City of Blood, in Assam.

  10. Day 10 Shillong (Approx. 230 Kms/5-6 Hrs.)

    Morning after breakfast drive to Shillong enroute visit Umden village & explore it’s unique history and culture of the Bhoi people (a sub group amongst the Khasi’s). Nestled in a serene and beautiful valley, and located just about 55 kms from Guwahati City, this small hamlet is an ideal getaway. The quaint little village of Umden is famous for Eri silk production and weaving of traditional handlooms like ryndia, stoles in exquisite patterns etc. The village takes pride in continuing the age old tradition of producing silk following the unique method of not killing the silk worm during the process of extracting silk from the cocoons. We call this the ‘ahimsa’ tradition of sericulture. Here one can witness all the steps in the sericulture value chain- starting from rearing of silk worms to spinning and reeling of silk to yarn production and dying and finally to weaving. You can even try your hand at weaving with a one-day course on weaving being offered for the tourists.

    Later proceed to Shillong for overnight.

  11. Day 11 Guwahati (Approx. 110 Kms/3-4 Hrs.)

  12. Day 12 Guwahati – Sualkuchi – Guwahati (Approx. 35 Kms/1 Hrs. One Way)

    Morning after breakfast go for a full day exploration of Sualkuchi, situated on the banks of the river Brahmaputra, 35 kms north of Guwahati city, is a weaving village produces some of the best quality of silk in the state. There are about 17000 silk looms in Sualkuchi producing different range of silk products. Sualkuchi is also said to be largest village in the world producing/weaving silk.

    Frequently known as ‘Manchester of the East’ due to large number of looms and increasing output from them.

    Almost every house has an adjacent shed (karkhana) that houses the traditional bamboo looms, the gentle click-clacking of which can be heard from the streets. Muga silk and Pat Silk along with Eri and Endi cloth from this region is famous for its quality. Mekhela chadors and Gamosas made from this indigenous materials is in demand throughout Assam as well as other parts of India. Explore the Village of Sualkuchi & explore local/Govt silk units. Later drive back to Guwahati for for Lunch and after lunch visit State Textile Institute and transfer to hotel for overnight.

4. Delhi-Guwahati-Tezpur-Ziro-Majuli-Kaziranga-Sibsagar-Mon-Dibrugarh-Delhi

  1. Day 1 Delhi-Guwahati-Tezpur (By flight + By surface approx. 220 Kms/05 Hrs)

    Meet on arrival & drive straight to Tezpur – City of Blood. Tezpur is also considered the cultural capital of Assam. The town has produced many stalwarts such as Dr. Bhupen Hazarika & the former speaker of the Indian Parliament, Somnath Chatterjee.

    Late afternoon visit Mahabhairab Temple, is believed to have been built by King Banasura himself. The Puranas state that Banasura was the first person to worship the linga form of Shiva. The Presiding deity, Mahabhairab, is a fierce incarnation of Shiva. Overnight in Tezpur. O/n at Tezpur.

  2. Day 2 Tezpur - Ziro (By surface approx. 290 Kms/08 Hrs) Mon

    Early morning visit to the Vaishnavite Monasteries ( Locally known as Satras) . Visit to Uttar Kamalabri & Auniati Satra . Also to the famous Mask Making Chamuguri Satra used to epic play. Later take the return ferry to Neematighat and drive on to Kaziranga National Park. O/n at Kaziranga National Park.

  6. Day 6 Kaziranga
